August at Naul: last of the summer shows

Thanks to the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre, a good friend to bluegrass and related music in the Dublin region, for their latest e-newsletter, giving details of coming musical events at the Centre up to 23 August. All shows begin at 8.30 p.m.

This coming Saturday (2 August) the Hot Seats (USA) bring in their blend of bluegrass, old-time, and plain entertainment, drawn from sources including Homer & Jethro, the Skillet Lickers, George Formby, Harry Reser, Woody Guthrie, Gus Cannon, Phil Ochs, Tommy Jarrell, Arthur Smith, Uncle Dave Macon, Frank Zappa, and many more. As the Centre points out, 'band member Ben Belcher is no stranger to the Séamus Ennis Centre, having played here just last month with the terrific Corn Potato String Band.' Book here.

The final show of the summer season (Sat. 23 August) has no direct connection with bluegrass - though the video on the SEAC website (and also visible on YouTube) shows the band in question playing with Chris Thile on a Prairie Home Companion show. The band in question is the Swedish trio Väsen, and anyone who loves tradition-based string music should enjoy them. They are also performing the following night (Sun. 24 Aug.) in the Black Box, Belfast, and on Wed. 27 Aug. at the Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Book for their Naul show here.
